In the early history of the West Indies, Colonial Spanish coins minted in Mexico City, Lima and the Portugese Johannes, served as the predominant coinage. This included Gold Doubloons, Pillar Dollar, Bust Pesos and Silver Cobs in all their denominations and cut pieces.
Many of the Island governments authorized the coins to be cut to revalue their intrinsic value or plugged to increase what had been shaved off by unscrupulous citizens.
